Measurement

Measurement is a process of collecting numerical data of tests that explains the level of response or performance of certain attributes or characteristics of a structure. In its development, especially concerning the structure of a building, has evolved into observations of the results of tests conducted from time to time. Historical data will be obtained from the result of this measurement, which shows the trend of the performance of a structure within a certain period.

With the advancement of computer and telecommunications technology, this measurement activity was further enhanced in civil engineering into Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS), where its activities monitor the measurement results, and it can be present variations of loading conditions in structural. Noting special conditions such as earthquakes, strong winds, etc. and give a warning if an anomaly occurs, or its measurement exceeds a predetermined safe point (threshold). The advantage of this system is that it can identify a decrease in structure strength or damage of the structural elements so that repairs can be done earlier to avoid further damage. SHMS is very beneficial because of the reduced structural strength caused by excessive and repetitive loads, collisions, earthquakes, environmental influences such as scouring, unavoidable aging, and material fatigue that can be anticipated so earlier that maintenance can be carried out to achieve the service life of a building structure.

SPI offer a Structural Health Monitoring or Measurement System (SHMS), for buildings, bridges, docks, tunnels, etc. because we have quite a long experience in development SHMS since 2009, and always keep abreast of instrumentation technology, even collaborating with manufacturers to produce an appropriate monitoring system so that its use is effective and efficient. We have proven that, and we have successfully carried it out on certain prestigious buildings.
